Clover mites are tiny, red or orange insects that can quickly become a nuisance indoors. While they pose no threat of biting, stinging, or causing structural damage, they can be frustrating pests to deal with.
What are Clover Mites?
Clover mites are commonly found in lawns, gardens, and other grassy areas. They feed on plants and can quickly multiply in large numbers. When conditions become unfavorable outdoors, such as drought or extreme temperatures, they seek shelter indoors and this is when they become a real nuisance inside.
Why Are They a Problem?
They often congregate on windows, walls, doors, decks, porches, and other light-colored surfaces, leaving behind tiny red stains. These stains can be difficult to remove and can damage fabrics and carpets. Quick tip, if you want to clear an area of clover mites use a vacuum or a wet towel as using a dry towel will smear and stain the surface with a reddish color.
Preventing Clover Mite Infestations
Several steps can help prevent clover mite infestations:
Maintain your lawn: Keep your lawn healthy and well-maintained. Mow regularly and avoid over-fertilizing.
Seal entry points: Inspect your home’s exterior for cracks and gaps and seal them to prevent entry points. This will help but since they are small complete seal up is impossible.
Window and door screens: Ensure your screens are in good condition and free of tears. Keep in mind that clover mites may still be able to enter through small gaps.
Regular cleaning: Vacuum regularly to remove any mites that have made their way indoors.
Create a Barrier: By adding a bed of rock or mulch at least 3 feet wide around the foundation, you can create a barrier that helps keep clover mites in the soil, effectively reducing the number that enters your home.
