How to Get Rid of Nuisance Fruit Flies in Kansas City

Hi my name is Luis Gonzalez, with another What’s Bugging You podcast.

Fruit flies can be a real nuisance, but don’t worry, getting rid of them should be no problem by following these two steps: trapping the adults and eliminating their breeding grounds. Here’s a step-by-step guide to take care of those pesky flies:

  1. Build a Fruit Fly Trap:

You can use common household items to create a simple yet effective trap. Here’s what you’ll need:

A jar (glass or plastic)
Apple cider vinegar (or any other fermented liquid like wine or beer)
A few drops of dish soap
A funnel or paper cone (optional)
Steps:

Fill the jar about ¼ cup full with apple cider vinegar.
Add a few drops of dish soap. The soap disrupts the surface tension of the vinegar, making it easier for the flies to drown.
If you’re using a funnel, place the narrow end pointing down into the jar. Alternatively, you can roll a piece of paper into a cone shape with a small opening at the tip, and secure it over the jar opening.
The flies will be lured in by the vinegar’s scent and get trapped inside the jar.

  1. Eliminate Breeding Sites:

Fruit flies breed in moist areas with decaying organic matter. Here’s how to stop them at the source:

Kitchen Clean-up: Be thorough! Clean and disinfect your counters, sink, and garbage disposal. Don’t forget to wipe down areas around fruits and vegetables.
Ripe Produce: Store ripe fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator. If you have fruits on the counter, keep them in a tightly sealed container.
Trash Management: Empty your trash can regularly and keep it covered with a tight-fitting lid.
Drain Cleaning: Pour a drain cleaner or baking soda and vinegar down your drains to remove any food particles that might attract flies.
Tips:

Place multiple traps around your kitchen, especially near where you see the most fruit fly activity.
Empty and reset the traps regularly.
Repeat these steps until you’ve eliminated the fruit fly infestation.
By following these steps, you should be able to effectively eliminate those pesky fruit flies from your home.
