The ants on your counter are scouts — less than 10% of the colony. Spraying them scatters the colony and multiplies the problem. We trace the trail to the source, eliminate the entire colony, and keep them out — from a local, owner-operated team with an entomologist on call.

    Identify your ant

    Which ant are you seeing?

These are three of the ants KC homeowners call us about most. They look similar at a glance — but they mean very different things for your home, and they require different treatments.

Carpenter ants cluster — large black ants that damage wood structures in Kansas City homes

    ⚠ Structural Damage Risk

    Carpenter Ants

Large — up to ½ inch — and black. They don’t eat wood, they excavate it, carving nest galleries through studs, joists, and window frames. Seeing them indoors, especially in spring, usually means a colony is established inside your walls. This is the ant you don’t wait on.

Little black ants trailing — tiny kitchen-invading ants common in Kansas City homes

    Nuisance — Kitchen Invader

    Little Black Ants

Tiny, jet-black, and they show up in long trails along counters, baseboards, and sinks — usually hunting sweets and grease. They nest in wall voids, under slabs, and in yard debris, and their colonies have multiple queens. Not dangerous, but persistent — and spraying the trail just reroutes them.

Acrobat ant colony — moisture-damaged wood nesting ants found in Kansas City soffits and decks

    ⚠ Moisture Warning Sign

    Acrobat Ants

Small ants with a heart-shaped abdomen they raise over their head when disturbed — that’s the “acrobat” move. Here’s why they matter: they nest in moisture-damaged wood. Finding acrobat ants in your soffits, deck, or window frames often means there’s a water problem feeding them. The ants are the symptom; the moisture is the story.

Carpenter ant satellite colony hidden inside a soffit — where ant colonies actually live in Kansas City homes
This is what you’re up against: a carpenter ant satellite colony tucked inside a soffit — completely invisible from inside the home. The ants on your counter are foragers from nests like this one. This is why spraying the trail never solves the problem.

Not sure which one you have? Take a clear photo or save one in a bag and call us at 913-820-9737. With an entomologist on call, identification is the first thing we get right — because the wrong ID leads to the wrong treatment.

    Why they keep coming back

You’ve sprayed. They came back. Here’s why.

You’re only seeing 10% of the colony

The ants marching across your counter are foragers — scouts sent to find food. The other 90% of the colony is hidden in your walls, under your foundation, or in your yard. Killing the visible ants does nothing to the colony producing them. Within days, new foragers replace the ones you sprayed.

    Sprays cause colony splitting

When you spray a repellent pesticide near an ant trail, the colony detects the chemical threat and responds by “budding” — splitting into multiple satellite colonies in different locations. You started with one colony. Now you have three. This is why ant problems often get dramatically worse after DIY treatment.

Home remedies just reroute the trail

Vinegar, cinnamon, and peppermint oil may disrupt a trail for a day or two — then the ants route around it. The colony, the queens, and the egg production are untouched. Deterrents don’t eliminate anything; they redecorate the problem.

“I’ve been using Midway Pest for a while and they have been amazing! Super kind and always able to answer questions. Seeing less and less bugs. 10/10 recommend!”

    How we handle it

    Our ant elimination process

Ant control done right targets the colony — the queen, the workers, the satellite nests — so the problem actually stops instead of pausing for a week.

    01

    Identify the species

Odorous house ants, carpenter ants, pavement ants, and pharaoh ants all require different strategies — and the wrong treatment can make some species split and multiply. We identify what you have first, with an entomologist on call for the tricky ones. Wrong ID = wrong treatment = wasted money.

    02

Locate the colony and treat the source

We follow trails to the nest — in your walls, under the foundation, in the yard, in the soffits — and for carpenter ants, we find the satellite nests too. Then we treat the source: professional baits workers carry back to the queen, direct nest treatment where accessible, and non-repellent applications ants transfer through the colony unknowingly.

    03

Barrier the exterior and keep them out

We treat your home’s perimeter — foundation, entry points, window and door frames, utility penetrations — so ants are stopped before they get inside. We also show you the conditions feeding the problem and, for year-round protection, our quarterly pest control plan keeps the barrier maintained so new colonies never establish.

Done wiping ants off the counter every morning? Let’s end it properly.

    What happens next

Here’s exactly what happens when you call or submit the form

    1. A real person answers or calls back within 30 minutes

You reach our local KC-metro office — not a call center. We ask what you’re seeing and where, and schedule your visit. Same-week appointments available. If you can snap a clear photo of the ants, even better — it speeds up identification.

    2. We inspect, identify, and give you a clear plan — in writing

Species identification, where the colony is, and exactly what treatment involves — priced in writing. No pressure, no scare tactics, and we encourage you to compare estimates.

    3. We treat the colony and verify it worked

Treatment starts on the first visit. You’ll see a major reduction within 24–48 hours, with full colony elimination typically inside 1–2 weeks as workers carry bait back to the queen. We follow up to confirm — and give you honest guidance on keeping them from coming back.

    Before you call

The four questions everyone asks us

“How quickly will the ants be gone?”

You’ll see a significant reduction within 24–48 hours of treatment. Complete colony elimination typically takes 1–2 weeks as worker ants carry bait back to the queen — for carpenter ant colonies in walls, sometimes 2–3 weeks. We follow up to verify results, and honest timelines are part of the job: anyone promising instant total elimination is selling you the spray-the-trail approach that got you here.

“Are the big black ants carpenter ants?”

Likely yes. Large (¼ to ½ inch) black ants indoors — especially in spring — are usually carpenter ants. Look for tiny piles of sawdust-like frass near baseboards or window frames. Carpenter ants excavate structural wood, so this is the species you don’t wait on. Snap a photo and call — we’ll confirm what you have.

“Is the treatment safe for my kids and pets?”

Yes. We use EPA-certified products applied in targeted locations — baits and crack-and-crevice placements, not broadcast spraying over your living spaces. We walk you through exactly what was applied and any precautions. We never use anything in your home we wouldn’t use in our own.

“How much does ant control cost?”

It depends on the species, how established the colony is, and your home’s size — which is why the estimate is free. We inspect, show you what we found, and put the price in writing. No hidden fees, and for year-round coverage, ants are included in our quarterly pest control plan.

    From the owner

    Dear Kansas City Homeowner,

“If ants keep coming back every spring, you’re treating the symptom — not the cause.

My name is Luis Gonzalez. I own Midway Pest Management, a local company serving the entire Kansas City metro. Ant calls are our most common service request from March through October — and the story is almost always the same: “I’ve been spraying for years and they keep coming back.”

They keep coming back because spraying kills the ants you see but doesn’t touch the colony producing them — and repellent sprays actually cause many ant species to split their colonies, making the problem worse. We do it differently: identify the species, locate the colony, treat the source, and verify it worked. And I recommend you get two or three estimates before deciding. When you compare, you’ll see the difference.

My commitment on every ant job

Honest identification, colony-level treatment, and straight answers about what elimination actually takes — no miracle-spray promises. My name is on the truck and my reputation is on every job.
