Cockroaches Olathe and Overland Park, KS

Hi everyone, this is Luis Gonzalez with Midway Pest Management, and welcome back to another episode of What’s Bugging You?

Today we’re talking about cockroach control in Kansas City, because August’s brutal heat and humidity push roach activity into overdrive, both outdoors and inside our homes.

Two roaches cause most of the trouble in the Kansas City area. The German cockroach is the small, tan roach with two dark stripes behind its head, and it’s the one that infests kitchens and bathrooms. German roaches reproduce incredibly fast; a single female and her offspring can produce thousands of roaches in a year. The other is the American cockroach, sometimes called a waterbug, a big reddish-brown roach that lives in sewers, storm drains, mulch beds, and crawl spaces. During hot, dry August stretches, American roaches migrate indoors looking for moisture, which is why you might find one in the bathtub or scuttling across the basement floor at night.

Roaches are more than gross. They contaminate food and surfaces with bacteria like salmonella, and their droppings and shed skins are a major trigger for asthma and allergies, especially in children. Because they’re nocturnal, seeing even one roach during the daytime often signals a much larger population hiding in cracks, wall voids, and under appliances.

Prevention is about denying roaches food, water, and shelter. In the kitchen, clean up crumbs and grease daily, don’t leave dirty dishes overnight, store food and pet food in sealed containers, and take trash out regularly. Fix leaky pipes and dripping faucets, since roaches can survive weeks without food but only days without water. Declutter cardboard boxes and paper bags, which roaches use as both harborage and food. Outside, seal cracks in the foundation, install door sweeps, keep mulch away from the foundation, and check items like grocery bags and secondhand appliances before bringing them indoors, because German roaches usually hitchhike their way in.

Here’s the hard truth about roaches: over-the-counter foggers and sprays rarely solve an infestation. Foggers don’t penetrate the cracks where roaches hide, and repellent sprays can scatter them into new areas of the home. German cockroach infestations in particular almost always require professional treatment. Cockroach control in Kansas City combines targeted gel baits, insect growth regulators, crack-and-crevice treatments, and follow-up visits to eliminate the population at every life stage, plus exclusion work to keep outdoor roaches from wandering in during the August heat.

One last note for August: roaches love the warm, damp mulch and thick ground cover right against your house, so pulling that landscaping back even a foot can noticeably cut down on the waterbugs wandering inside during the hottest, driest weeks of the Kansas City summer.
