Today we’re talking about flea control in Kansas City, because July’s combination of heat and humidity creates perfect conditions for one of the most frustrating pests a pet owner can face. Fleas thrive when temperatures sit in the 70s and 80s with high humidity, which describes just about every Kansas City summer day.
The cat flea is the most common species in our area, and despite the name, it happily feeds on dogs, cats, wildlife, and people. Adult fleas are tiny, dark, and built to jump, capable of leaping more than a hundred times their body length. But here’s what most homeowners don’t realize: the adult fleas you see on your pet are only about five percent of the infestation. The other ninety-five percent are eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden in carpet fibers, pet bedding, furniture cushions, and shady spots in the yard.
That’s what makes fleas so hard to beat. Flea pupae can sit dormant in a protective cocoon for weeks or even months, waiting for vibration and warmth to signal that a host is nearby. It’s why families sometimes come home from summer vacation to a sudden explosion of hungry fleas, and why a single treatment often seems to work for a week before the problem comes roaring back.
Fleas usually arrive on pets, but wildlife plays a big role in Kansas City neighborhoods. Squirrels, raccoons, opossums, and stray cats drop flea eggs in shaded areas of the yard, under decks, and in crawl spaces. Pets pick them up outside and carry them in.
Prevention starts with your pets. Keep them on veterinarian-recommended flea prevention year-round, not just in summer. Wash pet bedding weekly in hot water, and vacuum carpets, rugs, and furniture frequently, emptying the vacuum outside. In the yard, keep grass cut short, clear leaf litter, and block access under decks and porches where wildlife likes to rest.
If fleas have already moved in, understand that the infestation has to be attacked at every life stage.
