Today we’re talking about brown recluse spider control in Kansas City, a topic that gets a lot of attention this time of year, and for good reason. That’s why we tell homeowners to shake out shoes and clothing that have been sitting in closets or garages, especially during summer.
Kansas City homes give brown recluses plenty of habitat. Cluttered basements and garages, cardboard boxes, stacked firewood, and rarely used storage rooms are prime real estate. They feed on other insects, so a home with a healthy population of crickets, roaches, or other bugs is also feeding its spiders.
Prevention starts with reducing clutter. Swap cardboard boxes for sealed plastic totes, keep storage off the floor and away from walls, and vacuum regularly along baseboards and in corners. Seal cracks and gaps around the foundation, doors, and windows, and install door sweeps. Sticky glue traps placed along walls in basements and garages are a great monitoring tool that also tells you how big the problem is.
Here’s the honest truth: brown recluses are one of the hardest pests to eliminate with do-it-yourself methods. They avoid treated surfaces, hide deep in wall voids, and can survive months without food.
