Chiggers Olathe and Overland Park, KS

Hi everyone, this is Luis Gonzalez with Midway Pest Management, and welcome back to another episode of What’s Bugging You?

Today we’re talking about chiggers in Kansas City, the invisible summer pest responsible for some of the itchiest bites you’ll ever experience. If you’ve spent a July evening in the yard and woken up the next morning with a cluster of intensely itchy red welts around your ankles, waistband, or sock line, chiggers were almost certainly the culprit.

Chiggers are the larval stage of a harvest mite, and they’re so small you can barely see them without a magnifying glass. Contrary to popular belief, chiggers do not burrow into your skin and they don’t drink blood. Instead, they attach to a skin pore or hair follicle, inject digestive enzymes, and feed on dissolved skin cells. Your body’s reaction to those enzymes is what causes the maddening itch, which can last a week or more. The bumps typically show up where clothing fits tight against the skin, which is why bites concentrate around ankles, behind knees, and along waistbands.

Kansas and Missouri are prime chigger country, and July and August are peak months. Chiggers thrive in tall grass, weedy areas, brush, brambles, and the damp, shady edges of lawns. Berry patches, overgrown fence lines, and unmowed fields are classic hot spots. They wait on vegetation and climb aboard when you brush past, then wander your body for hours looking for a feeding site, which is why quick action after outdoor time matters.

Prevention starts with your yard. Keep grass mowed short, trim weeds and brush, and open up shady, damp areas to sunlight, since chiggers can’t survive in hot, dry conditions. When heading into taller vegetation, wear long pants tucked into socks and apply an EPA-registered repellent to shoes, socks, and pant legs. The single best trick: shower with soap and hot water as soon as you come inside, and toss your clothes straight into the wash. Chiggers often roam for a while before feeding, so a prompt shower washes many of them off before the itching ever starts.

If your yard has become a chigger minefield every summer, professional treatments can help. Chigger control in Kansas City targets the tall grass, brushy edges, and shaded transition zones where chigger populations concentrate, using the same barrier approach that works for ticks and fleas. Combined with regular mowing and moisture management, a treated yard means your family can enjoy summer evenings outside without paying for it in welts.

And a quick myth to bust before we go: painting bites with nail polish does not suffocate chiggers, because by the time you’re itching, the chigger is almost always long gone. Stick with anti-itch creams, cool compresses, and avoiding scratching so the bites don’t get infected while they heal.
