Yellow Jackets in Kansas City and Olathe

Yellow Jackets Hi everyone, this is Luis Gonzalez with Midway Pest Management, and welcome back to another episode of What’s Bugging You?
Today we’re talking about yellow jackets in Kansas City, and why August is the month when these stinging insects go from a background nuisance to the uninvited guest crashing every barbecue, picnic, and tailgate in the metro.
Yellow jackets are the compact, bright yellow and black wasps you see hovering around trash cans and soda cans in late summer. Unlike paper wasps, which build open, visible nests, yellow jackets usually nest out of sight: in abandoned rodent burrows underground, inside wall voids, under landscaping timbers, or behind siding. A colony that started with a single queen in April can hold thousands of workers by August, and that’s exactly when their behavior changes for the worse.
Late in the season, the colony shifts from raising larvae, which require protein, to fattening up on sugars. That’s why August yellow jackets swarm your lemonade, fruit, desserts, and open trash cans. At the same time, natural food sources start declining, competition rises, and the workers get noticeably more aggressive and persistent. Yellow jackets can sting repeatedly, they release alarm pheromones that recruit nestmates to attack, and disturbing a ground nest, often by simply running a lawn mower over it, can trigger a mass stinging incident. For anyone with a sting allergy, that’s a genuine emergency.
Prevention focuses on food and nest sites. Keep outdoor trash cans tightly sealed and clean them regularly, since sticky residue is a magnet. At cookouts, keep food covered, serve drinks in cups with lids instead of open cans, and clean up spills right away. Pick up fallen fruit under trees promptly. Walk your yard early in the season and watch for steady wasp traffic entering a hole in the ground, a gap in siding, or a space under a deck; finding a nest in June is a much smaller problem than finding it in August.
One firm warning: never pour gasoline down a ground nest, and don’t plug the entrance of a wall-void nest, because trapped yellow jackets will chew through drywall and end up inside your house. DIY attempts on mature August colonies are how people end up with dozens of stings. Professional yellow jacket control in Kansas City locates the actual nest, treats it safely with the right equipment and timing, and eliminates the colony at the source so your outdoor gatherings belong to you again.
One final distinction worth knowing: honey bees are fuzzy, docile, and valuable pollinators, and they’re not the ones raiding your soda can. If you’re seeing smooth, bright, aggressive insects around food and trash in August, those are yellow jackets, and they can be controlled without harming our local bee populations.
