Ticks Hi everyone, this is Luis Gonzalez with Midway Pest Management, and welcome back to another episode of What’s Bugging You?
Today we’re talking about tick control in Kansas City, a serious concern for families and pet owners throughout July when tick activity in our area is at its peak. Between backyard barbecues, hiking trails, and kids playing outside all day, summer is when people and ticks cross paths the most.
The Kansas City area is home to several tick species, including the lone star tick, the American dog tick, and the blacklegged tick, also known as the deer tick. These pests don’t jump or fly. Instead, they wait on tall grass and brush with their front legs outstretched, a behavior called questing, and latch on as people or pets brush past.
Ticks are more than just creepy. They can transmit diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and Lyme disease. The lone star tick, which is very common in Kansas and Missouri, has also been linked to alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to red meat that can develop after a bite. That makes tick prevention a genuine health issue, not just a comfort issue.
Your yard can harbor ticks even if you never leave the neighborhood. Problem areas include tall grass, leaf litter, brush piles, overgrown fence lines, and the shady transition zones where your lawn meets woods or unmaintained areas. Wildlife like deer, raccoons, and mice carry ticks into residential yards, so properties near creeks, greenways, and wooded lots in the Kansas City metro see the most pressure.
Prevention starts with landscaping. Keep grass mowed short, remove leaf litter and brush, and create a three-foot barrier of wood chips or gravel between wooded areas and your lawn. Keep playsets and patio furniture away from yard edges and in sunny spots, since ticks avoid hot, dry areas. When you spend time outdoors, wear light-colored clothing, tuck pants into socks, use an EPA-registered repellent, and do a full-body tick check on family members and pets when you come inside.
Pets deserve special attention. Talk to your veterinarian about year-round tick prevention, and check dogs around the ears, neck, and between the toes after time outside.

One more thing: if you do find an attached tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, grasping close to the skin and pulling straight up. Note the date on your calendar, and if a rash, fever, or flu-like symptoms develop in the following weeks, let your doctor know about the bite. Early awareness makes tick-borne illness much easier to treat.
